Solveig Wolstenholme

Fabric and Fiber Artist

Solveig Ronnqvist Wolstenholme loves fiber and texture in all its forms.

As a girl in Finland, I learned early to sew, knit and crochet from my mother. Arriving in the US at the age of 18, I went on to earn a BA in Fashion Design and Merchandising from the University of Connecticut, worked in fashion retailing for several years, and owned a quilt shop in Wickford, R. I., before deciding to concentrate on creating quilted wall art.

My technique is based on traditional American quilting techniques using the sewing machine as my main construction tool. Some works are framed while larger pieces are hung on rods through a fabric sleeve. I also enjoy creating functional items for the home and wearable items combining beauty with practicality employing all types of needle techniques.

Ideas and inspiration for my work come primarily from nature. Materials used are a variety of fabrics and fibers creating textures by altering the surface with overlays, adhesion, paint, needle felting and embroidery both by machine and by hand, or by any other means. The quilted surface adds life and a third dimension to the fabric construction like brush strokes on a canvas. Clean lines, richness of color and texture, and a sense of orderliness can be attributed to my Finnish upbringing and Nordic temperament.

I received my US citizenship in 1996. I live in Hebron, NH, with my husband.
