Alan Phenix
Silversmith
I started making “jewelry” in the 1970’s. I am not sure what inspired me, but my first creations were made by curling, soldering, and painting horseshoe nails into various configurations which became symmetrical pendant designs hung on leather laces. Show how I actually sold some of these in a small craft consignment shop. They were not beautiful, and I still have a few that I hang on the Christmas tree for laughs each year.
A few years later, my creative energies had a real chance to develop when I began as an apprentice to a silversmith in Northwood, NH. I loved the job the first day and soon quit my electronics job in Manchester to work with him full-time. I became the head of his production department after learning the art of lost wax cast and hand fabrications. We produced 200 pieces a week, I stayed there for three years before moving to Chocorua, NH. I was accepted to the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen in 1982, and in 1985 began my career as a self-employed craftsman on a full-time basis.
The silver and gold jewelry I produce is often based on themes in nature. I live in the woods near a lake and am surrounded by inspiration. I create by hand fabrication as well as by the ancient lost-wax casting technique.
I hand-fabricate flatware into earrings and pendants. Fork tines and spoon bowls make wonderful earrings! I use colorful, semi-precious stones to my c]pieces such as garnet, opal agate, amethyst and black onyx. All my work is signed when space permits. The workmanship is guaranteed. I believe in the strength and substance in my work and use only the highest quality ear wires, chains, clips, clasps, and jump rings to ensure longevity and durability.
